Framed Prints From Science Photo Library
Framed Print of Coloured artwork of spinal column & spinal nerves
Spinal nerves. Computer-enhanced historical illustration of the human spinal cord and spinal nerves. Red and blue blood vessels and red muscles of the back and the upper arms can be seen. The spinal cord is a mass of yellow nerve fibres running from top to bottom of image. The spinal cord and brain make up the central nervous system (CNS). A set of 31 spinal nerves are seen emerging in two rows at either side of the spinal cord. The lowest 9 nerves supply the legs and form a spray known as the cauda equina. Spinal nerves carry motor and sensory information between the body and CNS. Illustration by the celebrated Italian anatomist Paolo Mascagni (1755-1815).
