Early Devonian landscape. Artwork of early vascular plants growing on land during the Early Devonian period (420 to 395 million years ago). The Sun is low in the sky above a mountain range. These plants (Rhynia) are small, as most vascular plants of this era were less than about 60 centimetres high. Large terrestrial animals had not yet appeared, and these plants were among the first vascular plants to evolve, being more advanced than non-vascular bryophytes such as mosses. Larger fungal or lichen-like structures (Prototaxites) are shown in C016/5348.
