Framed Prints From Science Photo Library
Framed Print of F / col shadow TEM of E. coli dividing
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the bacterium Escherichia coli, a normal inhabitant of the human intestine, in the act of dividing. The shadow technique used in this TEM reveals hair-like pili fringing the cell wall; a certain type of pili, the sex pili, are involved in the transfer of DNA during bacterial conjugation. Under certain conditions E. coli bacteria may become harmful and cause infection in the intestinal or urinogenital tracts. This bacterium is in the early stages of binary fission, the process by which the organism divides in two. Magnification: x4700 at 35mm size, x9400 at 6x7cm size.
