Hydrogen balloon. Historical artwork of the landing of the first manned flight of a hydrogen balloon. Professor Jacques Charles and Nicholas Robert took off from the Tuileries Palace in Paris, France on 1 December 1783. They travelled for 43 kilometres before landing briefly. Robert got out, but Charles ascended again becoming Europes first solo balloonist. Gas balloons are known as Charliers in France, after their inventor.
