Framed Print of Insect compound eye, SEM C018 / 0554

Insect compound eye, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The units in a compound eye, the ommatidia, each contain a cornea and photoreceptor cells, and are capped by a cuticular biconvex lens. It is the cumulative effect of these that produces the vision of a compound eye. A compound eye is not very good at distinguishing detail, but it does enable the detection of tiny movements. This is one of the compound eyes of a heteropteran insect. Magnification: x150 when printed at 10 centimetres across. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © LOUISE HUGHES/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
