Framed Print of Mating green tree frogs
A breeding aggregation of Phyllomedusa trinitatis, the Trinidad leaf frog, or green tree frog. This species is found on the Caribbean island of Trinidad and in South America. Nocturnal creatures, they live in trees and bushes surrounding ponds. The female (centre) is 90mm long; the males, four of which are seen here, are smaller at 80mm. Breeding occurs at the start of the rainy season in June. Aggregations form when there is a shortage of females. Females lay eggs in nests of leaves folded into tubes, positioned above a pond. When the eggs hatch the larvae fall into the water and develop as tadpoles. Adult tree frogs feed on large insects, including crickets and moths.
