Mouse tail. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a mouses tail. At centre is the tail vein, which contains red blood cells. A smaller vein (purple squiggle) is seen at top centre left. The two black circles above the central vein are cartilage of the vertebral column, and each has a large nerve (pink circle) adjacent to it. The large brown ovoid structures are muscles and tendons. The outer layer of skin, the epidermis, is purple. Below this is the dermis (brown), a layer of fibrous connective tissue that contains the hair follicles (lilac circles), some of which are associated with sebaceous glands (orange structures).
