Venera 9. Model of the lander of the Soviet Venera 9 spacecraft. Venera 9 was launched on 8 June 1975 and entered a highly-elliptical orbit around Venus on 22 October. The 660kg lander was released on 20 October, and entered the atmosphere of Venus on 22 October. After slowing down from its entry speed of 38, 558 km per hour, the lander touched down successfully. It returned a single panoramic image of the surface and made various atmospheric measurements before being destroyed by the hostile conditions on the planet.
