Ship launch system, 16th century artwork. This method was originally invented by the Ancient Greek engineer Archimedes to pull a ship from land into water. The walled city of Syracuse, Archimedes home, is at top right. This is an engraving from a book by the French inventor and mathematician Jacques Besson (circa 1540-1573). The book was titled Theatre des instrumens mathematiques et mechaniques (Theatre of mathematical and mechanical instruments). This artwork is from an edition published in Lyon in 1596.
