Von Karmen vortices form when low winds blowing over a flat sea are disrupted by an obstacle, such as an island. The vortices are aligned with the wind in a row, or street, with alternate vortices rotating in opposite directions. Jan Mayen is a volcanic island in the Arctic Circle, governed by Norway. It measures 375 square kilometres and its highest peak is 2275 metres. Image taken on 16 May 2005.
