This caridean shrimp, Parapandalus richardi (family Pandalidae) migrates daily from deeper waters toward the surface at night, forming part of the "scattering layer." Apparently this shrimp is able to maintain a relatively constant metabolism while migrating between depths, something in contrast to other mesopelagic shrimp which had a decreasing metabolism with depth. This specimen was trawled at 350 meters depth in the Gulf of Mexico, 2010. © Dante Fenolio / Science Source
