This is a West African caecilian, Herpele squalostoma, and is known as the Congo caecilian. They are fossorial or live beneath the ground in soil and decomposing vegetation. Every aspect to the body plan of this species revolves around burrowing. Its eyes are covered by bone, its muscles can generate tremendous forces to push its body through the soil, and it has many sharp teeth for capturing food, which includes earthworms.
