Framed Print of Northern Hemisphere Constellations, 1686
Northern Hemisphere constellation, 1686. Philip Lea was one of the leading English mapmakers and publishers of his day, active between about 1683 and his death in 1700. This nicely decorated and accurately engraved map of the Northern Hemisphere was published in his Hercules Atlas. A constellation is an easily recognized group of stars that appear to be located close together in the sky and that form a picture if lines connecting them are imagined. Constellations are usually named after an animal, a character from mythology, or a common object. © New York Public Library / Science Source
