Framed Print of Stareye Lightfish

The Stareye Lightfish, Pollichthys mauli, had been found to depths of 600 meters. These fish make the daily migration with the "deep scattering layer" or DSL. The DSL is a community of deep water wildlife that migrates every day to shallow water, at night, to feed on plankton. They return to the depths by day. It is the largest migration of wildlife on the planet, and it happens every 24 hrs. Pollichthys mauli has a developed series of photophores that run the length of its body. This individual was captured at 500 meters depth, Gulf of Mexico, 2015. © Dante Fenolio / Science Source
