Mr Joseph Arthur Walter Perkins, a 24 year old experimental chemist, left his home in Erith, Kent to ride across Europe and the Sahara by motorcycle to Cape Town. This will be the first time ever if he succeeds. He is equipped with all sorts of equipment, from binoculars, revolver and rifle - to spare cans of oil and petrol and a specially built rear wheel to take the extra weight. His father saw him off.

Interesting points are the snorkle added to the exhaust pipe and an intake filter on the top of the fuel tank to enable safe river crossings.
