Framed Print of The Proclamation of the Regency
The Proclamation of the Regency. Engraving by Huyot based on a detail from one of Peter Paul Rubens' (1577-1640) paintings from Marie de' Medici Cycle, produced between 1600 and 1625. Following the assassination of King Henry IV on 14 May 1610, Queen Consort Marie de Medici (1575-1642) assumed the regency of France. The scene depicts the queen dressed in mourning, seated on the throne and assuming power as she receives a fleury globe as an emblem. Minerva (Wisdom) and Prudence advise her. Divine Providence offers her the helm, as a symbol of authority. The nobles of the kingdom swear allegiance to her. XVIIme siecle: lettres, sciences et arts, France 1590-1700 (17th century: letters, sciences and arts), by Paul Lacroix. Published in Paris by Librairie de Firmin-Didot et Cie, 1882. Universal Images Group (UIG) manages distribution for many leading specialist agencies worldwide.
