Da liegen sie vor uns, die schweigenden Zeugen der Vergangenheit, an denen schon Abraham und Jakob vorüberzogen, die gewaltigsten Grabstätten, die je Menschen von gigantischer Macht sich errichteten. Die größte barg den Sarkophag des Cheops (2850 v Chr.), die mittlere die des Chephren (2800 v. Chr.), die kleinste den des Menkaure (Mykerinos), um 2700 v. Chr. Der griechische Geschichtsschreiber Herodot erzählt uns, daß an der Cheopspyramide 100.000 Menschen zwanzig Jahre lang allerdings wohl nur zur Überschwemmungszeit, wenn der Ackerbau ruhte, gearbeitet haben. Viel zerstörende Hände sind an ihnen tätig gewesen. Der Plattenbelag ist entfernt. Wie viele Häuser Kairos mögen aus ihren Ruinen erbaut sein. Und doch haben sie der zeit getrotzt und stehen in ihrer massigen Wucht, in der wunderbaren Harmonie ihrer Flächen und Größenbemessungen, mit ihren verschlungenen Gängen und Kammern im Inneren wie ein Märchen aus der Vergangenheit da. Einiges noch zur Verständlichung ihrer Größe: die Cheopspyramide enthält jetzt noch 2.325.000 cbm Mauerwerk, zu dessen Wegschaffung 55.000 der größten Seeschiffe nötig wären. Die Grundfläche allein beträgt das Siebenfache von der des Kölner Domes, ihre Grundlinie beträgt jetzt noch 227, 5 m, ihre Höhe 146 Meter.
