Europe at night, satellite image

Europe at night. Satellite image of city lights at night, centred on Europe. North is at top, with the uninhabited dark of the Arctic at upper left. Bright areas mark dense urban populations, and the European coastline is clearly seen. Dense groups of cities are seen in England, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, and northern Italy. Paris and Madrid are also easily identified. Moscow is at centre right. Cairo and the Nile are at lower right, along with Israel. Oil rig lights are seen in the North Sea. Other lights include Iceland (upper left) and western Siberia (upper right). Desert areas, oceans, and inland seas are dark. For this area in the day, see E070/560

Snowflake, historical image

Snowflake. Light micrograph of a snowflake taken by Wilson Bentley (1865-1931). Bentley, a farmer from Vermont, USA, was the first person to successfully photograph snow flakes, taking the first photograph in 1885. He used a bellows camera attached to a light microscope. Snowflakes are symmetrical ice crystals that form in calm air with temperatures near the freezing point of water. The exact shape of a snowflake depends on local climatic conditions. Snowflakes typically have hexagonal symmetry. No two snowflakes are identical, as each experiences a wide range of conditions as it forms inside a cloud.

Morse telegraph key Featured Print

Morse telegraph key

Morse telegraph key, historical artwork. This is operated by tapping the key (black knob, upper right). This pivots the lever (across centre), bringing it into contact with the electrical contact at right (round, below the lever). This completes an electrical circuit, sending a signal down one of the two wires (upper centre). When the key is released, the lever pivots away from this transmission contact and touches the contact on the other side, completing the receiving circuit to allow incoming messages to arrive. This system allowed messages to be sent as a coded series of dots and dashes known as the Morse Code. This was developed by Samuel Morse in the 1830s. Artwork from A Travers l'Electricite (G. Dary, Paris, 1900)
