Abd El Kader, the Algerian leader, played a significant role in the conquest of Algeria from 1830 to 1847. In an iconic painting by Regis Augustin, we witness his submission to the Duke of Aumale and the French Armee on December 24th, 1847. Another captivating portrait of Abd El-Kader was painted in Constantinople in 1866 by Stanislas Cbebowski and is now displayed at Chantilly Museum. One notable event during this conquest was the capture of Smalah (Smala), where Abd-el-Kader's resilience echoed through history with his famous words: "In my family we don't step back. " The Duke of Aumale responded with determination alongside his General Staff. The defense of Mazagran also remains etched in memory as a fierce battle that took place from February 3rd to 6th, 1840. Emir Abd-el-Kader's light infantry valiantly resisted against the formidable French army of Africa. Ben Mahi Ed Din Abd El Kader left an indelible mark on Algeria's history before passing away in 1883. His leadership and bravery were exemplified by scenes like the red horsemen fleeing from hunters belonging to the French army. Even more remarkable is how Algerian Arab chiefs remained loyal to France during this tumultuous period, as depicted on the cover page of le Petit Journal. Abd El-Kader's legacy lives on through these historical accounts and artworks that immortalize him as a symbol of resistance and courage.
