Albert Frederick Arthur George, known as King George VI, was a significant figure in British history. Born on December 14, 1895, he ascended to the throne after his brother Edward VIII abdicated in 1936. This collection of images provides glimpses into various aspects of his life and reign. The Kings Orb and Sceptre from 1937 are symbols of royal authority and power. Created by an unknown artist, they represent the regalia used during coronations. In 1935, during King George V's Silver Jubilee celebrations, we see a photograph captured by an anonymous photographer. This image showcases the grandeur and pomp surrounding such momentous occasions. Another significant event depicted here is the crowning of Queen consorts in Westminster Abbey in 1937. The ceremony took place with great splendor and marked a pivotal moment for both King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth (formerly Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon). A more intimate scene shows the Royal Family enjoying time together at their residence - the Royal Lodge in Windsor - in 1946. Lisa Sheridan skillfully captures this candid moment that offers a glimpse into their private lives. During World War II, transportation played a crucial role. In this photo taken in 1940 by an unknown photographer, we witness the Coronation Scot train leaving Watford Tunnel – symbolizing resilience amidst challenging times. Two stunning portraits painted by John Singer Sargent depict Prince Albert (later Duke of York) and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon before their marriage in 1923. These artworks showcase Sargent's exceptional talent for capturing human emotion through brushstrokes. George VI served as Admiral of the Fleet within the Royal Navy – exemplifying his commitment to duty even beyond his role as monarch. A photograph from 1936 immortalizes him wearing naval attire with pride. An exquisite portrait from around that time portrays His Majesty King George VI himself; it was created by Captain P North.
