Alexander III of Russia, also known as Alexander Alexandrovich Romanov, was the Tsar of Russia from 1881 until his death in 1894. Born on March 10, 1845, he ascended to the throne after the assassination of his father, Alexander II. During his reign, Alexander III sought to strengthen and stabilize Russia both domestically and internationally. He implemented a policy known as "Russification, " which aimed to assimilate non-Russian ethnic groups into Russian culture and suppress nationalist movements within the empire. One significant event during his rule was the construction of the Alexander III Bridge in Paris. The bridge served as a symbol of friendship between France and Russia and showcased their diplomatic ties. However, not all moments were joyous for Alexander III. His wife Marie Sophie Frederikke Dagmar tragically passed away at a young age due to illness. This loss deeply affected him and influenced some decisions he made throughout his reign. The emperor's commitment to maintaining peace led him to form alliances with Austria-Hungary and Germany through treaties like Arbiters of Peace and War. These alliances aimed at preserving stability in Europe amidst rising tensions among major powers. In terms of foreign relations, one notable event was when he visited Paris where he laid the foundation stone for the aforementioned bridge over River Seine. This visit marked an important moment in Russo-French relations. Tragedy struck again when Alexander III himself died prematurely at just forty-nine years old. His funeral took place in St Petersburg's Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul where mourners bid farewell while "Ashes to Ashes" echoed through engraved scenes depicting this somber occasion. Throughout his reign, there were attempts on his life by those who opposed his policies or sought political change through violence - depicted vividly in engravings capturing The Attempt to Murder the Emperor of Russia.
