August Liebmann was a passionate art enthusiast who had an extensive collection of renowned masterpieces. Among his prized possessions were Diego Velasquez's "Las Hilanderas" (The Spinners), a captivating depiction of women engaged in the art of weaving, and Francisco Goya's provocative "La Maja Desnuda" (The Naked Maja), showcasing the artist's mastery in capturing sensuality. Liebmann also admired Goya's works such as "La Gallina Ciega" (Blind Man's Buff), which portrayed playful scenes filled with mystery, and the powerful "Escenas Del 3 De Mayo De 1808" (May 3, 1808 in Madrid), illustrating the atrocities witnessed during war. In addition to Spanish artists, Liebmann appreciated Albrecht Durer's skillful portraiture seen in "Retrato de Hans Imhoff, " while Vicente Lopez y Portana captured his attention with his portrayal of Goya himself in "Retrato Del Pintor Don Francsico Goya. " Francisco Goya continued to captivate Liebmann with diverse subjects like the alluringly clothed figure depicted in "La Maja Vestida" (The Clothed Maja) and the whimsical scene presented in "El Pelele" (The Straw Manikin). Liebmann also cherished other notable artworks including Francisco Goya’s lively depiction of grape harvest titled “La Vendimia” or “Autumn, ” as well as his humorous portrayal of everyday life found within “El Cacharrero” (The Crockery). Furthermore, he treasured Jacob Jordaens’ masterpiece “Retrato de Familia” (Painters Family) for its representation of familial bonds. Through these remarkable pieces, August Liebmann created a personal gallery that showcased artistic brilliance across different periods and genres.
