August Liebmann Mayer was a passionate art collector and connoisseur, known for his extensive collection of masterpieces from renowned artists. His love for art led him to acquire some of the most iconic works in history, including "Las Hilanderas" by Diego Velasquez, depicting women spinning thread with incredible detail and precision. Mayer's collection also featured Francisco Goya's captivating pieces such as "La Maja Desnuda, " a provocative portrayal of a naked woman exuding sensuality and confidence. Another notable Goya artwork in his possession was "La Gallina Ciega, " showcasing the artist's ability to capture emotion through expressive faces. In addition to Spanish artists, Mayer appreciated the talent of other European masters like Albrecht Durer. He proudly owned Durer's "Retrato de Hans Imhoff, " an exquisite portrait that showcased the subject's personality and character. Mayer also cherished Vicente Lopez y Portana’s masterpiece titled "Retrato Del Pintor Don Francisco Goya. " This painting depicted Goya himself, providing insight into the life and persona of one of Spain's greatest painters. One cannot overlook Mayer’s admiration for Goya’s historical depictions such as “Escenas Del 3 De Mayo De 1808, ” which portrayed the atrocities committed during May 3rd events in Madrid. The raw emotions captured on canvas were a testament to both Goya’s skill as an artist and Mayer’s appreciation for powerful storytelling through art. Among his prized possessions was another work by Francisco Goya called "La Maja Vestida, " showing the same mysterious woman from “La Maja Desnuda” now clothed but still emanating allure and intrigue. Additionally, he possessed Goya's whimsical piece called "El Pelele, " featuring a straw manikin being tossed playfully into the air by women—a delightful representation of carefree joy.
