Auklets, the charismatic seabirds of the North Pacific, are a sight to behold. From the Whiskered Auklet with its delicate features and distinct whiskers, found on Iony Island in the Sea of Okhotsk, to the Crested Auklet displaying its vibrant breeding plumage during courtship on Jonas Island. In Alaska's Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, we witness the beauty of these birds up close. The adult Whiskered Auklet captivates us with its intricate head markings and breeding colors. Meanwhile, a pair of Crested Auklets engage in an enchanting courtship display while standing proudly on a rock amidst rainfall. The Least Auklet stands tall on another rocky surface within this refuge. Its striking breeding plumage showcases its elegance against nature's backdrop. Sometimes different species come together harmoniously; two adults each from Crested and Least Auklets share their breeding plumages side by side. Another duo of Crested Auklets shake off water droplets from their feathers after taking a refreshing dip. Further south along Oregon's coast, we encounter the majestic Rhinoceros Auklet. This bird commands attention as it perches confidently on rocks or calls out over shimmering waters. With fish clasped firmly in its beak, wings spread wide open above water - it is truly a remarkable sight. And even when bathing and splashing water around itself joyfully, this magnificent creature exudes grace and charm. These captivating moments captured across various locations remind us why auklets hold such fascination for bird enthusiasts worldwide – their unique characteristics and behaviors make them true marvels of nature.
