"The Battle of Salamanca: Ensign Johnny Newcome's First Taste of War" In the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, a young and eager Ensign named Johnny Newcome found himself introduced to the esteemed Colonel of his regiment, the 5th Regiment of Dragoon Guards. Little did he know that this encounter would mark the beginning of an unforgettable chapter in his life. The date was July 22nd, 1812 - a day etched in history as The Battle of Salamanca. As depicted in a handcoloured copperplate engraving by Thomas Rowlandson, Ensign Newcome stood alongside his fellow soldiers as they prepared for their first taste of battle. The litho artwork vividly captured Pakenham's Third Division charging forward with unwavering determination. Another engraving showcased Wellington's Third, Fifth, and Sixth Divisions advancing towards victory. The British Army displayed remarkable bravery and skill against their French adversaries on that fateful day. A cavalry charge against French infantry illustrated just how intense and chaotic the battlefield became. Ensign Newcome experienced firsthand the adrenaline rush as he participated in his inaugural action - joining forces with his comrades to charge against the formidable French Army at Salamanca. It was here that he smelled powder for the very first time; a moment forever etched into his memory. Amidst all this chaos, one cannot overlook Lord Wellington's pivotal role in leading his troops to triumph. His entrance into Salamanca painted a picture worth remembering - an illustration capturing both power and grace by J. C Stadler. As time went on, memories were preserved through sketches from "The Illustrated Naval and Military Magazine. " These engravings immortalized not only battles but also poignant moments such as soldiers burying fallen comrades while others sought respite near their encampment. Yet amidst all these images depicting war-torn landscapes and heroic acts, there is another side to war.
