Catherine I of Russia, a remarkable woman who defied expectations and left an indelible mark on history. Born in 1684, she rose from humble beginnings to become the Empress of Russia. Her relationship with Peter the Great was complex yet enduring. In one lithograph, we see Catherine urging him to write, recognizing that his words held salvation. Their bond was further solidified when Peter ordered Karol Skowronski to kiss Catherine's skirt hem as a sign of respect. But Catherine's journey wasn't without its challenges. Prince Menshikov, once a powerful figure in her court, was banished to Siberia in 1727. Another lithograph depicts her being ceded as a prisoner to Princess Menshikov in Marienburg. Despite these trials, Catherine proved herself capable and resilient. A portrait painted in 1717 captures her regal presence and strength. She exuded power as she sat upon the throne, ruling alongside Peter during their visit to the Netherlands. The Romanov Dynasty owed much of its success to Catherine's reign. An engraving showcasing Russian rulers highlights both Peter the Great and his successors' contributions under Catherine's influence. In Charles Boit's painting from 1717, we witness Catherine's beauty radiating through delicate brushstrokes—a testament to her elegance and grace that captivated all who beheld her. Finally, another artwork portrays the conclusion of Empress Catherine I's coronation ceremony on May 6th, 1724—an event that marked not only her ascension but also symbolized hope for Russia's future under her rule. Catherine I will forever be remembered as a trailblazer—a woman who defied societal norms and paved the way for future female leaders in Russia and beyond.
