The Celtics, a fascinating ancient civilization that left an indelible mark on history. From Vercingetorix's surrender to Julius Caesar at the Siege of Alesia in 52 BC, to the Gauls' resilience depicted in Roman sculptures and engravings from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, their story is one of strength and determination. The image of Gaul falling captures the essence of their struggle against external forces. Even during conflicts like the Plunder of Rome by Brennus in 390 BC, they stood defiantly with a cry: "Woe to the defeated. " The Gauls were not easily subdued. Julius Caesar himself experienced firsthand the might and bravery of these Celtic warriors during his invasion of Gaul. Their resistance was fierce, leaving an everlasting impression on historical illustrations from as early as 1895. Intriguing tales also emerge from everyday life among the Celts. The geese on the Capitol of Toulouse served as vigilant sentinels against Gallic attacks, showcasing their resourcefulness and strategic thinking even in times of peace. Celtic druids played a significant role within their society, preserving knowledge and guiding spiritual practices. Engravings from around 1790 depict them immersed in ancient rituals that continue to captivate our imagination today. As time went on, some Celtic tribes integrated into larger empires such as Rome. Germanic horsemen became part of the Roman army during its decline in the 4th century AD while Trajan's Column showcases Germanic bodyguards protecting later Caesars - evidence that Celtic influence persisted long after their own kingdoms had faded away. A poignant reminder comes through "A Dying Gaul, " a reproduction highlighting both vulnerability and courage amidst adversity – traits synonymous with this remarkable civilization. The Celtics may be gone but are far from forgotten; they live on through artistry carved into marble or etched onto paper.
