"The Colossus of Memnon: A Glimpse into Ancient Thebes" Step back in time to the ancient city of Thebes, where towering statues known as the Colossi of Memnon stand proudly amidst the ruins. These magnificent structures have captured the imagination of artists and explorers alike, leaving a lasting impression on all who encounter them. Maxime du Camp, a French photographer and writer, ventured to Gournah in 1849-51 to document these awe-inspiring colossi. His photographs from this expedition provide us with a glimpse into the grandeur that once graced the banks of the Nile. In his prints from 1852, Du Camp captures both Les Colosses and Sculptures du Trone des Colosses in their majestic splendor. Another notable explorer and photographer, Francis Frith, also found himself captivated by these colossal figures. In his work "The Statues of Memnon" from 1857 (printed in 1862), Frith immortalizes these iconic statues against the backdrop of Thebes' vast plain. His images transport us back to an era when these statues were not mere remnants but living symbols of power and divinity. Du Camp's lens focuses specifically on one statue - "Colosse monolithe d Amenopht III. " This monolithic marvel stands tall as a testament to Pharaoh Amenhotep III's reign during Egypt's New Kingdom period. Du Camp's photographs reveal intricate details that highlight its restoration efforts while showcasing its imposing presence within Gournah. Not only did Du Camp capture still images but he also documented moments surrounding these colossal wonders. One such image depicts "Siege du colosse monolithe d Amenophis III, " offering a unique perspective on how people interacted with this monumental piece of history. Gournah was not just home to one colossus; it housed two.
