"Coquillage: A Journey Through Art, History, and Nature" Step into the enchanting world of coquillages (shells) as we explore their significance in various aspects of human life. From ancient mythological tales to artistic masterpieces, these delicate treasures have captivated our imagination for centuries. In Sandro Botticelli's iconic painting "The Birth of Venus, " we witness the goddess rising from the water on a shell, surrounded by Hour, the goddess of spring. Zephyr, the god of wind, carries with him the nymph Aura. This masterpiece portrays both beauty and grace intertwined with elements of nature. Transporting ourselves to 18th-century Paris, we encounter an ecaillere (oyster saleswoman) wearing a typical cap. The chromolithography from the 19th century captures this metier that has now disappeared but remains a part of history. Delving further back in time to the Neolithic era, pierced shells were used as precious ornaments constituting necklaces. These artifacts remind us of our ancestors' creativity and resourcefulness. Pearl fishing takes center stage in an allegorical representation depicting aquatic and Indian nymphs adorned with coral and pearl shells. This artwork from around 1590 celebrates not only natural riches but also symbolizes exploration and discovery during the age of exploration. In another tale inspired by La Fontaine's fables, a Phoenician discovers a rare Murex shell thanks to his faithful dog. Such stories highlight how shells have been woven into folklore across different cultures throughout history. Moving away from mythology and artistry towards everyday life experiences, shells become metaphors for senses like taste, hearing, touch in allegories representing sensory perception at its finest. Love finds its way even amidst tortoises leading Cupid on his journey through life—a charming scene depicted in oil on panel that showcases how they can be associated with love and romance.
