Coypu, also known as nutria, is a riparian rodent that was introduced to the UK but later eradicated. Originally from America, this fascinating creature has made its mark in various parts of the world. With its distinctive features, the head of a coypu showcases its orange incisors and long whiskers. A stunning sight can be witnessed at a lake near Les Bois du Bardelet in France where these creatures thrive. Even during winter, coypus like to explore their surroundings. In S-E Arndt's photograph titled "Nutria Winter 01, " we catch a glimpse of these resilient animals adapting to colder climates. At London Zoo, visitors are treated to an up-close encounter with a coypu sitting on a rocky ledge in its enclosure. This particular species called Myocastor coypu displays remarkable characteristics that captivate all who observe it. Dating back to 1860, an Atlantic Tree Rat is depicted in a colorful lithograph showcasing the diversity within this family of rodents. The image serves as evidence of how long these creatures have been captivating our attention. In April 1925, two coypus were photographed resting among rocks in their enclosure at London Zoo. This black and white photo captures their peaceful demeanor and offers us insight into their behavior within captivity. Grosseto in Tuscany, Italy provides another habitat for these intriguing creatures. Here they roam freely amidst nature's beauty while leaving traces of their presence throughout Europe. Venturing across continents brings us to Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge in Washington State, USA. Witnessing a nutria scratching itself reminds us that even though they may be considered pests by some due to environmental concerns caused by overpopulation; they still possess endearing behaviors worth appreciating. Coypu trapping is one method employed for population control purposes or scientific research studies aiming to understand more about these unique rodents' habits and impact on ecosystems.
