William John Crump (1850-1923), the first Mayor of Islington (1900-02), was a man of many talents and surprises. From leading the London borough to fame, to sharing the limelight with music hall legend Harry Champion, Crump's life was far from ordinary. In the roaring twenties, Crump's passion for motorsport took center stage. He drove Atalanta in the 1952 Daily Express National Rally and the 1954 Redex Rally, leaving a trail of dust and excitement in his wake. The creators of these images captured the essence of his daring spirit. But Crump's love for speed wasn't limited to cars. In the 1930s, he competed in the MCC Sporting Trial with his MG M type, showcasing his skill and determination. Bill Brunell's artworks immortalized these moments, adding to Crump's growing legend. Back in the early 1900s, Crump was also known for his beloved griffon terrier, Crump, who was as charming as his human counterpart. The terrier, pipe in mouth and cigarette in paw, was a beloved companion and mascot. Crump's life took him to Lodge Park, Sherborne, Aldsworth, Gloucestershire, where he witnessed the thrilling sight of horses running the gauntlet of guns during WW1. This experience, much like his encounters with Harry Champion and the world of motorsport, added another layer to the intriguing tapestry of his life. Crump's story didn't end in London. He ventured across the Atlantic, becoming an American politician and Tennessee congressman under the name Edward Hull Crump (1874-1954). His legacy continues to inspire, a testament to a life filled with adventure, courage, and a touch of the extraordinary.
