"Entfuhrung," or "Abduction," is a timeless theme that has captivated artists and audiences for centuries. This narrative, as depicted in the 1581-83 painting "Rape of the Sabine Women," has been reimagined in various forms, including in Mozart's opera "The Abduction from the Seraglio" (1782). The Covent Garden principals brought this classic tale to life, with Belmonte, a Spanish nobleman, and Constanze, his Spanish betrothed, facing challenges in their love story. Max Klinger's etching "Abduction" (EntfaOEhrung) from 1878-1880, and Lovis Corinth's etching "EntfaOEhrung" from 1894, are just two of the many artistic interpretations of this theme. In Mozart's opera, Pedrillo, a servant to Belmonte, uses cunning to ply Osmin, the Pasha, with drink, while Blonda, Constanze's maid, waits in the background, planning their escape. The Sultan, with his favorite companions, is depicted in a 16th-century painting, showcasing the opulence and grandeur of the time. Constanze's elegant costume from 1913, designed for the opera's production, exudes sophistication and grace, while Belmonte's costume, also from 1913, reflects his noble status. Throughout history, the story of "Entfuhrung" has continued to inspire and captivate, with its themes of love, deception, and triumph over adversity.
