Anterior view of the human skull reveals the intricate structure of the ethmoid bone, a key component of the skull base. Labeled here, the ethmoid bone houses the olfactory bulbs (C014 / 0511), responsible for our sense of smell. Adjacent to it, the frontal bone (not shown) forms the forehead. The it also forms part of the orbital bones, which protect the eyes. In cases of inflammation, such as plepon dasyitis or orbital cellulitis (C014 / 0512), the ethmoid bone may be affected. The nasal cavity lining, shown in light micrographs (C014 / 0509 and C014 / 0513), provides a barrier against external pathogens and contributes to the filtration, humidification, and warming of inhaled air. The ethmoid bone's complex anatomy plays a crucial role in head and neck functions, including respiration, olfaction, and vision.
