"Evicted: The Harsh Reality of Land Disputes in 19th Century Ireland" In the picturesque County Kerry, Ireland, eviction was a grim reality that plagued the lives of many families. One haunting image captures an eviction scene in County Clare, frozen in black and white. It serves as a stark reminder of the hardships endured during this tumultuous period. A new law emerged, offering tenants a glimmer of hope - a right to one-third of their freehold after seven years' rent. However, this seemingly fair provision came with a catch; non-payment would strip them of this lifeline. In 1870, an Irish family faced the heart-wrenching consequence of non-payment and were evicted from their cherished home. This event unfolded against the backdrop of social unrest and economic turmoil that engulfed Ireland at that time. Artistic expressions further shed light on these distressing events. "The Expulsion, " depicted through oil on panel, portrays the anguish experienced by those forcibly removed from their homes. Similarly, "An Irish Eviction" captured in vibrant litho colors showcases both the pain and resilience exhibited by affected families. "The Parnell Commission, " immortalized through engravings at Royal Courts of Justice, symbolizes the ongoing struggle for justice amidst land disputes. Meanwhile, "All That is Left" presents a poignant engraving depicting scenes from Mayo's eviction crisis in 1886 – showcasing how little remained for those who lost everything. Even across borders and languages, such as depicted in Henry Duff Linton's work titled "En Angleterre: Pauvre Jenny. " published in Le Journal Illustre- we witness empathy towards these displaced souls. One notable resistance movement arose under the Plan of Campaign on Vandeleur Estate where tenants united against unfair treatment – fighting for their rights amidst adversity. These historical glimpses into evictions serve as reminders not only about past injustices but also the resilience and determination of those affected.
