From the grandeur of Venice's Church of Santa Maria della Salute in 1740 to Queen Victoria's extravagant Georgian Costume Ball at Buckingham Palace, these historical events were nothing short of spectacular. In 1842, another magnificent affair took place as Queen Victoria hosted her Plantagenet Costume Ball. The palace was transformed into a medieval wonderland, with guests donning elaborate costumes reminiscent of knights and noble ladies from centuries past. Not one to shy away from lavish celebrations, Queen Victoria organized yet another memorable event - the Restoration Costume Ball. Held in 1845, this soirée transported attendees back to the days of Charles II's reign, complete with sumptuous gowns and powdered wigs. The Graphic magazine captured the essence of these enchanting parties on its front cover in 1886. The image depicted elegantly dressed men and women mingling amidst an atmosphere filled with excitement and anticipation. Aubrey Beardsley's artistic contributions also showcased his fascination with costume balls. His title page for The Savoy Nos 1 and 2 exuded an air of mystery while his Scarlet Pastorale evoked sensuality through intricate designs. Le Bal (The Costume Ball), a French furnishing fabric dating back to the early nineteenth century, featured vibrant colors and ornate patterns that would have adorned ballrooms during that era. Shakespeare immortalized masquerade balls in Romeo and Juliet's Act 1 Scene 5 where star-crossed lovers meet under disguises. This scene captures both romance and intrigue within the magical ambiance created by masks adorning every face. Edouard Manet's Masked Ball at the Opera painting transports us to Parisian society in 1873. It depicts elegant figures dancing gracefully while hidden behind their elaborate masks - a symbol of anonymity amidst high society gatherings.
