Andreas Feininger, a renowned photographer, captured the essence of industrial America in his captivating images. In 1942, he ventured into the heart of Utah's mining industry to document the open-pit workings of the Utah Copper Company in Bingham Canyon. From high above on the "G" bridge, Feininger gazed upon Carr Fork Canyon and immortalized its rugged beauty juxtaposed with man-made structures. Feininger's lens then shifted to Geneva, Utah, where he documented the rapid progress at Columbia Steel Co. The steel and concrete seemed to come alive as they were meticulously placed for a new steel mill. He also captured partly finished open hearth furnaces and stacks that stood tall against the sky. The construction frenzy continued as Feininger witnessed workers building a new structure on-site at Columbia Steel Co. , showcasing their dedication and skill. Moving away from Utah, his camera found itself capturing scenic views along US 40 in Mount Vernon Canyon, Colorado. The road stretched endlessly before him, inviting exploration and adventure. In Creede, Colorado, Feininger explored Main Street bustling with life despite being surrounded by old lead mines that had been reopened. He then turned his attention to Willow Creek - its tranquil waters flowing through nature's untouched landscape provided solace amidst an ever-changing world. Feininger's journey took him to Garfield, Utah where he documented American Smelting and Refining operations - a testament to human ingenuity harnessing natural resources for progress. Throughout his photographic odyssey in 1942, Andreas Feininger showcased both the grandeur of industrialization and nature's resilience side by side. His lens transformed ordinary scenes into extraordinary works of art while preserving moments that would otherwise be forgotten over time.
