Ferdowsi, also known as Abu l-Qasim Manur Firdawsi, was a renowned Persian poet who lived during the 10th and 11th centuries. He is best known for his epic masterpiece, Shahnameh or The Book of Kings, which chronicles the mythical and historical past of Iran. In this stunning manuscript illumination from the 16th century, we see Kay Khusraw being welcomed by his grandfather, Kay Kaus, the King of Iran. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring to life this momentous occasion in Iranian history. Another captivating illustration depicts Rustam's incredible strength as he kicks back a massive rock rolled on him by Bahman. This scene showcases Ferdowsi's ability to weave together action-packed narratives that captivate readers even today. The Battle between Khosrow II and Bahram Chobin is depicted in another masterpiece by an Iranian master artist from the 15th century. This intense battle scene portrays the clash between two powerful figures with great precision and skill. Ferdowsi's Shahnameh also includes stories beyond Iranian borders. One such tale is beautifully illustrated here - The Queen of Sheba meeting King Solomon. This exquisite manuscript illumination showcases Ferdowsi's ability to transport readers across time and space through his vivid storytelling. Abu l-Qasim Manur Firdawsi's talent shines once again in an illustration depicting the torture of one of Haftvads guards from Shahnama. With gouache on paper technique used here, every detail comes alive with intensity and emotion. A haunting image shows two horsemen engaged in combat; one impaled on a spear. Painted with opaque watercolor on paper around 1450 AD. , it serves as a reminder of the brutality often portrayed within Ferdowsi's tales. Kai Khusrau Enthroned Holding a Sword illustrates power and authority emanating from the central character.
