In the lush forests of Sri Lanka and Thailand, a fiery spectacle unfolds as flamebacks take center stage. The Black-rumped Flameback, with its vibrant plumage, showcases nature's artistry as it forages for ants on tree trunks in Polonnaruwa. The adult female displays her grace and agility while seeking sustenance amidst the bark's crevices. Meanwhile, the male Black-rumped Flameback joins in the hunt, his striking appearance contrasting against the backdrop of February's beauty. Clinging to tree trunks with unwavering determination, he scours every inch for nourishment. In December, this endemic race reveals itself further as it feeds within dead trees or clings effortlessly to their sturdy trunks. Not far away in Sundarbans' Ganges Delta lies another captivating sight – an adult female Black-rumped Flameback gracefully foraging on the ground. Her elegant movements blend seamlessly with her surroundings as she seeks sustenance beneath towering trees. Venturing beyond Sri Lanka's borders, we encounter the White-naped Woodpecker clinging tenaciously to a palm tree trunk in December. This endemic race proudly exhibits its unique features while navigating through nature's intricate tapestry. Thailand also boasts its own array of flamebacks; among them is the Common Flameback whose resplendent feathers shimmer under February sunlight. Whether feeding under branches or drumming rhythmically on tree trunks in Kaeng Krachan National Park, these males leave no doubt about their presence. Finally, we meet the Greater Flameback - a majestic creature that commands attention with each powerful grip onto a tree trunk. Its guttacristatus subspecies stands out against November's landscape like a beacon of strength and resilience. These flamebacks remind us of nature's boundless wonders and serve as ambassadors for conservation efforts worldwide. As they navigate their habitats with grace and purpose, may we too find inspiration to protect and preserve the beauty that surrounds us.
