Flowering Rush: A Locally Rare Beauty The Flowering-rush (Butomus umbellatus) is a captivating plant that can be found in the Langham Ponds SSSI, Surrey. This species is locally rare, making it even more special to encounter. Its exquisite appearance has inspired various designs for wallpaper borders, fabrics, and panels. One such design features "Dragonflies; Waterlilies and Flowering Rush, " while another showcases "Humming Birds and Orchids. " Additionally, there is a design called "Humming Birds and Maiden Hair Fern" from L'Animal dans la Decoration. Artists throughout history have also been captivated by the beauty of the Flowering Rush. In fact, a chromolitho titled "Flowering Rush" was created specifically to celebrate this remarkable plant. Another botanical illustration by Sydenham Edwards for William Curtis Lectures on Botany depicts Hexagynia flowers with hermaphrodite characteristics. The Flowering Rush belongs to the perianthed plants family and has been featured in stunning color lithographs showcasing its vibrant hues. Furthermore, Jewel Beetles were so enamored by this flower that they were depicted in colored engravings alongside it during 1833-39. This unique plant exhibits stamens and stigma along with nectar globules at the base of its carpels. Its intricate details have not only fascinated artists but also served as inspiration for poolside plants' arrangements. Victorian botanists recognized its significance too, resulting in a beautiful botanical illustration titled "Flowering Rush (Juncus Effusus)" within the Juncaceae family. Interestingly, when observed under UV light, drops of nectar on the Flowering Rush fluoresce brilliantly. This phenomenon adds an enchanting touch to an already mesmerizing sight found in Surrey's countryside.
