Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria (1830-1916), also known as Franz Joseph Lorraine, ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1867 until his death. Born in Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna, in 1830, he ascended to the throne following the death of his father, Emperor Ferdinand I. Known for his devotion to duty and traditional values, Franz Joseph celebrated his birthday annually with grand ceremonies, as depicted in this series of images from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first photograph shows Franz Joseph in military attire, likely taken during his birthday celebrations in the 1860s. Another image captures the look-out point on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, named in his honor. The private office of the emperor in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna is also shown, as well as cheering crowds in Berlin welcoming him in 1914. Franz Joseph's image was also used to promote Duke brand cigarettes in the Holidays series. As Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, Franz Joseph ruled over a vast multinational empire until its dissolution following World War I.
