Fred Harvey was an artist who captured the essence of various landscapes and cultures in his postcards. From the Indian Church in Pueblo of Sandia, near Albuquerque, New Mexico to Guanajuata, Mexico, he showcased his talent for capturing the beauty of different places. His bird's-eye view postcard of Kansas City gave viewers a unique perspective on the bustling cityscape. In another postcard, he depicted Roosevelt Dam near Phoenix, Arizona, highlighting its grandeur against the surrounding landscape. Harvey also documented agricultural scenes such as 10, 000 acres of sugar beets in Kansas. Through his artwork, he celebrated both natural wonders and human achievements like San Juan Capistrano Mission in California and Native Roof Garden Party at Hopi House. Traveling further westward to Apache Canyon in New Mexico, Harvey captured the iconic California Limited train passing through this picturesque location. He also portrayed Russell and Monett nearing Needles in California with stunning detail. In addition to landscapes and architectural marvels, Harvey turned his lens towards people as well. Pedro from Navaho Reservation appeared on one of his postcards showcasing the diversity within Native American communities. Another card featured Zuyah-Chee - a Navaho child - highlighting their close bond with parents during childhood but revealing that it may not always persist into old age. Finally, Harvey took us to Union Station in Chicago where thousands of people entered or left daily through its extensive train-sheds spanning nearly half a mile. Through Fred Harvey's artistry and attention to detail, we are transported back in time to experience these captivating moments across America and beyond.
