Gerald Durrell, the renowned British naturalist and author, poses with his wife Jacqueline and their beloved pet chimpanzee, Cholmondley, at Les Augres Manor in Jersey, Channel Islands. Established in 1959, the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, now known as Jersey Zoo, was Gerald's brainchild, dedicated to saving rare and endangered species from extinction. Gerald's unique approach to conservation involved rescuing animals from the wild and reintroducing them into their natural habitats. With a passion for wildlife and a commitment to preserving it, the Durrells' home became a sanctuary for many exotic creatures, including Cholmondley, who was a cherished member of their family.
