"The Great Depression: A Time of Struggle and Resilience" The Jarrow March, a historic event that took place on 5th October 1936, symbolized the desperation and determination of the working class during the Great Depression. Unemployed coal miners from Jarrow, England marched to London in protest against poverty and unemployment. With their rallying cry "Organize? With 1, 250, 000 Workers Backing Us, Of Course We Will Organize, " workers united to demand better conditions. This powerful message was captured in an original oil painting by Ben Shahn in the late 1930s. The artwork served as a poster advocating for worker solidarity during these challenging times. Dorothea Lange's iconic photograph series "Migrant Mother" depicted Florence Thompson, a 32-year-old migrant worker with her seven children in a camp for migrant workers in Nipomo, California in 1936. These images highlighted the hardships faced by families who were forced to migrate due to economic instability. The stock market crash of Black Thursday on October 30th, 1929 left many speculators like Walter Thornton offering to sell their possessions just to survive. In his desperate attempt after losing everything he had invested, Thornton offered his roadster for sale as depicted through an oil-over-photograph artwork created at that time. Arthur Rothstein's photographs captured both despair and resilience during this era. His image of unemployed men demonstrating outside Jarrow illustrated the frustration felt by those affected by joblessness. Another photograph showcased a dust storm over Texas panhandle caused by drought - highlighting how environmental factors compounded economic woes. In Butte Montana, men stood defiantly outside the Board of Trade bar and gambling house amidst economic uncertainty captured through Arthur Rothstein's lens in 1939; showcasing how people sought solace or distraction from their troubles even amid adversity. Ben Shahn's painting for Steel Workers Organizing Committee represented the collective efforts of workers to fight for their rights.
