Great Horned Owls (Bubo virginianus) bask in the sun's warm rays, both in their natural habitats and captivity. Canadian-born photographer William Notman captured a captive Great Horned Owl perched proudly, while in Edmonton, Alberta, three chicks huddled together in a tree. Elsewhere, four chicks were documented in another nest. In their American habitats, these owls have been known to nest in old Red-tailed Hawk nests, such as in Southeast Arizona, or use waterfowl nesting platforms, like in Wyoming. Young Great Horned Owls, flightless and in defensive display, have also been observed in the northeastern United States.
