"Habsbourg-Lorraine: A Dynasty's Trials and Triumphs" The Habsbourg-Lorraine family, a prominent European dynasty, witnessed both the heights of power and the depths of tragedy throughout their reign. From the grandeur of Peter Leopold, Grand Duke of Tuscany, to the heartbreaking trials faced by Marie-Antoinette, this family's story is one filled with intrigue and sorrow. In 1782, a captivating gouache on paper captures The Family of Peter Leopold. This artwork showcases their regal presence and hints at the future greatness that awaited them. Little did they know that Leopold II would ascend to become Holy Roman Emperor. However, not all members of this illustrious lineage were destined for glory. The Trial of Marie-Antoinette in 1793 marked a dark chapter in history as she faced accusations that ultimately led to her execution. A litho depicting this fateful event serves as a haunting reminder of her tragic fate. Marie Antoinette was not alone in facing such an untimely demise within the Habsbourg-Lorraine family. The Execution of Maximilian I further punctuated their tumultuous journey through time. An oil painting immortalizes his final moments—a stark contrast to his earlier oath-taking ceremony depicted in an engraving from Miramare. The Revolution spared no mercy even for royalty; Marie Antoinette met her end at Place de la Revolution on October 16th, 1793—an event captured vividly in a colored engraving that still sends shivers down our spines today. Pencil sketches also showcase her appearance before the Revolutionary Tribunal Court just days prior—her stoic demeanor belying the impending doom she faced. Yet amidst these tragedies emerged moments of joy and celebration within this storied lineage. The Empress Marie-Louise gave birth to Maximilian I—the King of Rome—in 1811, a moment of hope and promise for the Habsbourg-Lorraine family.
