Fast forward to a department store in Newark, New Jersey, USA, where a young Luther Halsey Gulick, social scientist and director, browsed for supplies. Coincidentally, another Luther Halsey, American Naval Admiral, planned strategy for the Philippine campaign with his team on board a naval carrier, c1942. The Duke and Duchess of Northumberland's house party might have been graced by the presence of these intriguing Halseys, had time and space allowed.
