The Heliconiini family is home to a diverse range of beautiful butterflies, each with its own unique characteristics and habitats. One such member is the Small pearl-bordered fritillary (Boloria selene), which can be found in various locations across the UK. In Cornwall, at Marsland mouth, this delicate butterfly can be spotted gracefully perched on an oxeye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare), creating a stunning contrast between its vibrant orange wings and the white petals of the flower. During May, it seeks refuge on a ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) nearby, showcasing its intricate patterns against the backdrop of Devonshire's landscape. Moving further west to Cornwall again in June, we witness a head-on view of this enchanting creature as it rests peacefully on blades of grass. Its presence adds an ethereal touch to nature's canvas. The small pearl-bordered fritillary also frequents both Cornwall and Devon regions simultaneously, reminding us that beauty knows no boundaries. Another member of the Boloria genus is the Pearl-bordered fritillary (Boloria euphrosyne). This species finds nourishment from Wild Rosemary (Rhododendron tomentosum), displaying its harmonious relationship with nature as it delicately feeds upon these blossoms. Venturing beyond European borders brings us face-to-face with Julia heleconia (Dryas iulia) butterflies atop Yacare caimans' heads in South America. This unexpected sight showcases how different species coexist in their natural habitat. In mountainous alpine meadows resides Titanias fritillary (Boloria titania), basking under sunlight while surrounded by lichens like Rhizocarpon geographicum growing on rocks. These resilient creatures adapt seamlessly to their environment for survival.
