Henry Birkin, a legendary figure in the world of motorsports, left an indelible mark on the racing scene with his exceptional skills and fearless attitude. Born into a family passionate about automobiles, he inherited his love for speed from his father Tim Birkin and grandfather Edgar Fronteras. In 1930, driving a Bentley single-seater at a BARC meeting in Brooklands, Henry Birkin emerged victorious in a thrilling race that showcased his remarkable talent behind the wheel. The roaring engine of his Bentley echoed through the circuit as he sped towards triumph. Two years later, at the RAC TT Race held at Ards Circuit in Belfast, Birkin's Alfa Romeo chased down Edgar Maclure's Riley with relentless determination. The crowd watched in awe as these two titans battled it out on the track, leaving spectators breathless with their electrifying performance. Birkin's passion for racing extended beyond national borders. In 1928, he competed at Boulogne Motor Week in France aboard his trusty Bentley. Renowned artist Bill Brunell captured this exhilarating moment on canvas to immortalize Birkin's fierce spirit and dedication to his craft. At another BARC meeting in Brooklands, Sir Henry Birkin found himself leading Earl Howe's Bugatti Type 54 while piloting his iconic Bentley. These intense duels between formidable opponents pushed both drivers to their limits and thrilled audiences who witnessed their epic battles firsthand. Tragically, Sir Henry Birkin met an untimely end in 1937 during a race at Brooklands. As a tribute to this extraordinary racer who had become synonymous with speed and bravery on the track, artist Gordon Crosby created a memorial panel that stands proudly at Brooklands today—a reminder of Sir Henry's enduring legacy. Whether it was conquering circuits or pushing boundaries across countries like Northern Ireland or France, Henry Birkin embodied everything that made motorsports exhilarating.
