Henry Riley (1821-1887), a renowned botanist and illustrator, made significant contributions to the study of ferns. His meticulous observations and detailed illustrations have left an indelible mark on the field of botany. One of his notable works includes documenting Polystichum aculeatum lobatum, commonly known as the prickly shield fern. Riley's intricate drawings captured the unique structure and characteristics of this species, providing valuable insights for future researchers. Another fern that caught Riley's attention was Hymenophyllum tunbridgense, also called the tunbridge film fern. Alongside its relative H. Unilaterale, he meticulously studied these delicate plants and produced stunning illustrations that showcased their ethereal beauty. Riley's fascination with ferns extended to other varieties such as Athyrium Filix-foemina multifidum, better known as the lady fern. With Bradbury by his side, he delved into understanding its complex fronds and distinctive features. Trichomanes radicans, commonly referred to as the European bristle fern, also found a place in Riley's botanical explorations. Collaborating with Bradbury once again, they shed light on this intriguing species through exquisite illustrations that brought it to life on paper. Asplenium fontanum and Asplenium lanceolatum were two more specimens that piqued Riley's curiosity. The smooth rock spleenwort held secrets waiting to be unraveled by him alongside Bradbury's expertise in capturing its essence through artistry. The mountain polypody or Beech fern (Polypodium Phegopteris) was yet another subject of interest for Henry Riley and Bradbury. Their combined efforts resulted in comprehensive documentation highlighting its distinct characteristics against breathtaking natural backdrops. Athyrium Filix-foemina crispum and depaperatum were two variations within this species that captivated Riley's attention.
