The horned helmet, a fascinating piece of history, has captivated the imagination for centuries. Originating in Southern Germany around 1520/30 and Milan in 1500/20, these helmets were crafted by unknown creators who left their mark on this iconic headgear. One can envision the intricate details of these armet helmets as they adorned the heads of knights and warriors. Basreliefs at an entrance to a small temple from Nimroud depict scenes reminiscent of ancient battles where soldiers donned such helmets, adding an air of authenticity to their historical significance. In literature, we find references to the horned helmet's allure. Havelock begs Mercy from Godard in "Havelock the Dane, " painting a vivid picture of medieval times when bravery was measured by one's choice of head protection. Beyond its military context, lagoon life offers another perspective on this unique helmet. Its shape resembles that of Cassis cornuta, an exquisite shell with a peach-orange shiny surface and large lip opening. Nature itself seems to have taken inspiration from this remarkable piece. As time progressed, variations emerged across different regions and purposes. The German Augsburg Tourney Armet (ca. 1515-20) created by Kolman Helmschmid showcases how functionality met style during tournaments - blending protection with elegance. The British or Flemish Armet (ca. 1500-1510), whose creator remains unknown like many others before them, adds further mystery to its allure as it stands as a testament to craftsmanship without recognition. Even into the seventeenth century workshop of Konrad Seusenhofer continued producing these magnificent pieces that would stand out among armor collections worldwide. Not limited solely to battlefields or workshops but also extending into fashion trends is the Italian Armet with Matching Wrapper (ca. 1475). This Milanese creation exemplifies how even protective gear could be transformed into fashionable accessories during Renaissance Italy. Finally, the horned helmet's legacy is immortalized in art.
